History of the United States National Senior Sports Organization (USNSO)
The founding of the USNSO, their vision, and the success of the first National Senior Olympic Games.
The First “Senior Olympix” multisports event was organized by Warren Blaney in Los Angeles in 1970. Find the timeline here. Maine and New Jersey Senior Games hit the map in 1985!
The story of senior sports on a national stage began in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1985.
A group of seven passionate individuals, dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles for adults, came together to form the US National Senior Sports Organization (USNSO). Their vision was to leverage education, fitness, and sports to empower older adults.
Later that year, the USNSO hosted a pivotal meeting. Representatives from 33 states, already running senior games at the local level, gathered in St. Louis. This collaborative effort paved the way for the inaugural National Senior Olympic Games, held in 1987 right there in St. Louis. The games were a resounding success, attracting over 2,500 participants eager to showcase their athleticism.
Following this triumph, the USNSO solidified its foundation.
In 1987, they officially incorporated, elected a Board of Directors, and established legal documentation. The momentous first Games ceremony even drew over 100,000 spectators, with legendary entertainer Bob Hope adding a touch of star power to the event held near the iconic St. Louis Riverfront Arch.
In 1990, the name was changed to the National Senior Games Association – and thereafter was called the National Senior Games – The Senior Olympics.
